BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Two-time Tony Award-winning actress, singer, and dancer Sutton Foster will bring her celebrated talents to IU Auditorium on Tuesday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. for An Evening with Sutton Foster. For this special Bloomington performance, Foster will be joined onstage by Indiana University and Ball State University student performers as part of the second annual Curry Family Spotlight.

 

Widely recognized as one of Broadway’s leading performers, Foster most recently starred as Princess Winnifred in the acclaimed Broadway revival of Once Upon a Mattress. Prior to that, she appeared as Mrs. Lovett in the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and starred as Marian Paroo in the 2022 revival of The Music Man, a performance that earned Foster her seventh Tony Award nomination.

 

Foster first rose to Broadway prominence originating the title role in Thoroughly Modern Millie, earning her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2002. She won her second Tony for her acclaimed performance as Reno Sweeney in the 2011 revival of Anything Goes. Her extensive Broadway credits also include The Drowsy Chaperone, Shrek the Musical, Young Frankenstein, Violet, Les Misérables, Annie, and Grease.

 

Beyond the Broadway stage, Foster starred for seven seasons in the critically acclaimed television series Younger and has appeared in Bunheads, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. As a solo artist, she has toured extensively and performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Feinstein’s, and Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series. She has released three solo albums and recently teamed with fellow Broadway star Kelli O’Hara for a special touring concert series that debuted at Carnegie Hall.

 

Foster’s IU Auditorium appearance will also provide a unique opportunity for the next generation of performers to share the stage with one of musical theatre’s most accomplished artists. IU and Ball State students, as well as a local youth performer will take part in the evening as part of the Curry Family Spotlight, continuing the initiative’s emphasis on connecting world-class artists with students from the university and Bloomington community.

 

Prior to the performance, IU professor of musical theatre DJ Gray will lead a special pre-show talk from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in Fine Arts Building Room 015. Gray will explore the evolution of Broadway’s leading ladies and Foster’s place within that tradition. The talk is free and open to the public.

The Curry Family Spotlight will annually present a top performing artist as part of the IU Auditorium season and provide inspirational engagement opportunities for students, patrons, and community members surrounding the artist’s visit to Bloomington.
