Martha Graham Dance Company Returns to IU Auditorium March 1

Feb 9 / 2022

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A world leader in the evolving art form of modern dance for nearly a century, the Martha Graham Dance Company will take to the IU Auditorium stage on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Martha Graham, the founder of the dance company in 1926, was recognized as one of the most invigorating artistic forces of the 20th century through her creation of the iconic Graham Technique along with countless artistic works. In 1998, TIME magazine named Graham “Dancer of the Century,” and People magazine named her among the female “Icons of the Century.” She was the first dancer to perform at the White House, travel abroad as a cultural ambassador, and receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction.

Honoring Martha Graham’s legacy in all artistic endeavors, the Company finds ways to refreshingly embrace her longstanding masterpieces alongside more recently commissioned works by premiere contemporary choreographers of today. Their Bloomington performance will include the works Acts of Light, Diversion of Angels, Immediate Tragedy, and Scavengers.

“We are extremely honored to bring back Martha Graham Dance Company to Bloomington,” IU Auditorium Executive Director Doug Booher said. “This will mark the fifth time this world-renowned Company has performed on our stage dating back to 1949. Our audience will be treated to an unforgettable evening with some of the world’s best performers.”

Educational Activities for IU and Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) Students

While in Bloomington, the Martha Graham Dance Company will provide educational and outreach activities for IU and local school students.

On February 28, the Company will lead a masterclass with students from IU’s Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance. Students participating in this special interaction will also get to witness the public performance the following evening.

On Tuesday, March 1 at 11 a.m., eighth grade students from MCCSC will visit IU Auditorium in person for a school day morning performance. The Company will perform Diversion of Angels as well as interact with the students and answer questions. The event will also be available via livestream and as a recording for MCCSC seventh grade students, as well as other school corporations in the surrounding area. The media is welcome to attend the March 1 daytime program.

Martha Graham Dance Company at IU Auditorium is presented in partnership with the IU Foundation, Women’s Philanthropy at Indiana University, Arts Midwest, and Smithville. IU Auditorium’s season is presented by B97, Curry Auto Center, The Herald Times, French Lick Resort, and World Arts Inc.
