HAIRSPRAY
Big hair, big fun, and a barrel of danceable tunes

This high-energy musical comedy has been a feel-good phenomenon for two decades. The Tony Award-winning show takes you back to 1962 to meet Tracy Turnblad, a heavy-set Baltimore teen with a high-altitude hairdo, a heart of gold, and a burning desire to dance.

As Tracy twists her way onto the set of a Top 40 TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show, she goes from adolescent outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can she also dethrone Amber Von Tussle, queen of the program’s annual “Miss Teenage Hairspray” pageant? … Can she find the courage to confess her love for Amber’s boyfriend, heartthrob Link Larkin … And can she strike a blow for racial equality by helping to integrate the show’s cast of high schoolers?

It’s a tall order, but high-octane Tracy is up to the task, as audiences all over the world can attest.

Hairspray was born in 1988 as a feature film from writer/director John Waters; it came to the Broadway stage years later, winning eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. With a Tony- and Grammy-winning score by Oscar-nominated composer/lyricist Marc Shaiman and co-lyricist Scott Wittman, Hairspray features one unforgettable song after another, including “Good Morning Baltimore,” “The Nicest Kids in Town,” and “Welcome to the 60s.”

Sweet and sassy, with toe-tapping tunes and a touch of camp, Hairspray is delightful proof that, as Tracy sings, “you can’t stop the beat.”
