The Indiana Memorial Union Board, along with the IU GLBT Alumni Association and GLBT Support Services Office, is proud to present actress, advocate, and artist Laverne Cox.
Actress Laverne Cox’s role in the hit television series Orange Is the New Black has earned her nationwide acclaim for not only her exquisite performances, but for shedding light on the struggles experienced by members of the GLBT community. Although always an active advocate for GLBT rights, Cox has used her celebrity to cement her a place as a leading voice for the transgender community.
TIME magazine listed her “fan-favorite” character Sophia Burset as the fourth most influential fictional character of 2013, calling her “the most dynamic transgender character in TV history.” Cox’s Orange Is the New Black role has earned multiple nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and in 2014, won the Dorian Rising Star Award. In addition, she is the first transgender woman to appear on the cover of TIME magazine, the first trans-woman of color to star in a mainstream television drama, and the first to receive an Emmy nomination
In her Auditorium appearance, Cox sheds light on her own experience as a member of the transgendered community, and seeks to empower others to live authentically and disregard gender expectations.
