Indiana University Dance Theatre, under the auspices of IU Contemporary Dance, will offer a spectacular evening of dance in celebration of 85 years of modern dance on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. The program consists of four original dance works by the field’s best and brightest. Opening the program is audience-favorite “Esplanade,” choreographed by modern dance icon Paul Taylor. This masterpiece was inspired by pedestrian movement, a girl running to catch a bus, and takes us through a gamut of joy and sorrow, but ends spectacularly. Williams Evans’ (former director of IU Contemporary Dance) “Rite of Summer” will follow, and offers a stark contrast. This theatrical piece of modern dance is built around luscious explorations of time and space, and draws the audience into the dancer’s tumultuous inner web. Next on the program is “Straight Duet,” choreographed by contemporary artists Larry Keigwin and Nicole Wolcott (New York City’s Keigwin + Company); this funny, sad, and poignant work explores the unraveling of a couple’s relationship on their wedding night (it is performed on a mattress). Finally, David Parsons’ loving and exuberant tribute to Brazilian composer Milton Nascimento closes the program with “Nascimento Novo,” an all-out dance party that will leave you breathless.
